Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium in Brandon, Fla., has awarded its first scholarship to a culinary student.
The award-winning gourmet retailer known in the Tampa Bay area as “the culinary resource” was The Gourmet Retailer’s Kitchenware Retailer of the Year 2013 and a U.S. gia winner for independent kitchenware retail.
Owners Karen and David West, pictured right, presented their first scholarship, called Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium Annual Culinary Scholarship, in the amount of $1,200 to Renita Jones. She also received a Wüsthof knife set. Jones studies Restaurant Management at Hillsborough Community College and will graduate this fall with a degree in restaurant management, according to Osprey Observer (Brandon, Fla.)
“To qualify for this particular scholarship, students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average and much more,” Dave West said in an interview with the Osprey Observer.
Outside the classroom, Jones is an avid baker turned entrepreneur. For the past 13 years, Jones been selling her cupcakes at a booth at the Ybor City Saturday Market. She also decorates wedding cakes and bakes an assortment of desserts through the business she owns called Lexi Cakes.
