What do espresso and popcorn have in common? They may not be good together, but popcorn makers and espresso makers are two small kitchen electric categories that are showing growth in a challenging economy.

According to NPD’s Retail Tracking Service, sales of espresso makers have grown by 18 percent in both units and dollars in the 12 months ending November 2010, compared to the previous year. Popcorn makers also have been on a hot streak for a couple years now, with double-digit unit growth since 2008.

As consumers continue to look for ways to save money, but still enjoy themselves, entertaining guests at home with something a little more special than a cup of coffee or watching the latest movie out on DVD with some fresh popcorn may be good compromises, the report suggests.
