With an expanded variety of dairy, beer, gluten-free, natural and organic products, Price Chopper’s newest store in Chenango Bridge, N.Y., opened last week.
“We are so pleased to offer a brand new, state-of-the-art supermarket here in Chenango that contains many of our signature products and services, with a special focus on many products that are produced right here in this area” says Neil Golub, CEO.
The 60,000-square-foot store was designed to attain silver-level certification in the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. "We focused our sustainable efforts to make the shopping experience as pleasurable as possible, while reducing our utility consumption and thereby better controlling costs at the consumer level," explains COO Jerry Golub.
Sustainable features include precast concrete walls that reduced construction waste, and skylights incorporated into the roof to allow for natural light to flood the store. Sensors detect when or if electric lighting is needed to augment natural light, and freezers and cases are illuminated with energy-efficient LED bulbs.
In additon to the expanded selections of dairy, beer, gluten-free, natural and organic products, the LEED-certified store offers an expanded variety household goods and locally produced and manufactured products.
Among the store offerings are fresh custom-cut and self-service meats, more than 500 varieties of fresh organic and conventional fruit and vegetables, a full-service seafood department, a full-service deli with Boars Head and Price Chopper brand premium meats and cheeses, the Market Center Café dining area, daily baked artisan breads, the Central Market Classic “Decadent Dessert” program, and a Central Market Florist department.
A traditional night-before-the-opening “Preview Party” held by Price Chopper raised more than $3,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Binghamton, the South Central New York Region American Red Cross and the Chenango SPCA. Attendees paid $5 each to sample hot and cold buffet stations throughout the store and enjoy on-site entertainment. All proceeds, along with a match of $1,500 from the grocer, were split among the three beneficiaries.
Opening day festivities included an official ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by company officials, political and civic leaders and consumers. A Boar’s Head lunch special -- a hot dog, chips and beverage for $3 -- was part of opening day’s festivities; 100 percent of the proceeds are going to the American Civic Association Memorial Park.
