In observation of America Recycles Day, regional grocery store chain Harris Teeter held a free recycling drive on Nov. 12 at the North Hills Shopping Center in Raleigh, N.C. First observed in 1997, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized observance and community-driven awareness event dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.
At the drive, volunteers collected such recyclables as electronics (anything with a cord); rigid plastics (plastic buckets, toys, lawn furniture, two feet in length and 40 pounds or less); paper shredding (three-box limit per person); and plastic bags and film (clean, grocery, retail, newspaper, dry cleaning and toilet paper, paper towel, napkin and electronic wraps). Participants remained in their vehicles, and the first 500 people in line each received a free Harris Teeter reusable shopping bag.
Besides Harris Teeter, which was on hand to collect plastic bags and film, Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco Recycling collected rigid plastics, Mississauga, Ontario-based ProShred offered paper shredding and Madison, N.C.-based Synergy collected electronics. Event organizers and supporters included the city of Raleigh, Wake County, North Hills, Clear Channel and ProShred.
A subsidiary of Ruddick Corp., Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter operates 206 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia.
