For the second time in two years, Mrs. Renfro’s Salsas has been named a healthy snack food by Fitness Magazine. In the July/August 2011 issue, the product was named among the Best Savory Snacks in the publication’s 5th Annual Fitness 2011 Healthy Food Awards.
In general, salsa has been on an upward trend in recent years, as consumer demand for hot and spicy foods as well as new flavors has steadily been on the rise.
More than 1,000 healthy snacks from hundreds of companies were submitted to Fitness Magazine. Foods that were low in calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium and added sugars made the first cut. Anar Allidina, RD, a nutritionist in private practice in New York City; Keri Gans, RD, author of “The Small Change Diet”; and Marissa Lippert, RD, author of “The Cheater’s Diet,” then sorted through the 850-plus remaining products, analyzing the nutrition facts and ingredient labels to help Fitness determine which ones deserved to move to the next round for taste testing. The finalists were sampled and voted on by dozens of staffers throughout the company.
Last year, Mrs. Renfro’s Habanero Salsa was named among the "125 Best Packaged Foods for Women" in Women's Health's 2010 November issue, while Mrs. Renfro’s Pineapple Salsa took top honors in the Processed Salsa-Fruit category at the 2010 Scovie Awards, the world's leading recognition for hot and spicy products.
