In support of Celiac Awareness Month, Rising Sun Farms, based in Phoenix, Ore., will donate 10 percent of its profits in May to the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF). The CDF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services and support for celiac disease through programs of awareness, education, advocacy and research.
Celiac, or gluten intolerance, is an autoimmune disorder caused by eating gluten, a protein found in certain grains such as wheat, barley, oats, rye, spelt and in many food additives.
Growing disease awareness has fueled the demand for gluten-free products. From 2006 to 2010, the segment experienced a compound annual growth rate increase of 30 percent. Predictions call for $6 billion in retail sales by 2015.
Since its inception in 1985, Rising Sun Farms always has produced 100-percent gluten-free foods and is known for its line of cheese tortas. Rising Sun Farms products are free from chemical additives. All products are produced in their dedicated gluten-free production facility.
