The Fair Trade Movement

PrintThe Fair Trade Movement

Numi Teas introduced three Fair Trade-certified teas -- Monkey King: Jasmine Green Tea, Aged Earl Grey, and Golden Chai. Now, approximately two-thirds of Numi's offerings are Fair Traded, which will also include Numi's top-seller Red Mellow Bush: Rooibos. It will be certified and available later in the year; their Honeybush is on the Trans Fair list. Besides their new Fair Trade-certified teas, Numi has partnered with Community Gatepath, a not-for-profit organization that offers integrative employment to disabled adults. For more than four years, Numi Bamboo Boxes and assorted boxes have been hand-packed at Community Gatepath. The state of California matches each dollar Numi donates to Community Gatepath to support their programs. For more information, send e-mail to reem@numitea.com, or call 510-534-6864.

Sattwa Chai continued its pioneering spirit with the introduction of their new Sattwa Organic Chai Concentrate with Organic and Fair Trade-certified Black Tea. The transition of the traditional one-to-one ratio concentrate into all organic with Fair Trade-certified tea aligns both the company and the product with the owners' core values. The concentrate is available in half-gallon bottles for foodservice applications, in addition to quart bottles for merchandising. A variety of attractive point-of-sale materials is available. For more information, send e-mail to info@sattwa.com, or call 503-538-4715.

Serendipitea presented a new Fair Trade-certified line of teas that includes their Fair Trade Chai, which won the Best New Tea Product award at the exhibition.
Also new was a De-Caff line of teas that includes Organic and Fair Trade Green and Black Teas (straight and blends). The teas are decaffeinated using the carbon dioxide process that delivers a natural, decaffeinated tea in the purest manner possible. Carbon dioxide, acting as a solvent in a super-critical state under high pressure and low temperature, dissolves all active components from natural materials in the leaf. By varying the extraction-separation pressures and temperatures, carbon dioxide makes it possible to selectively extract only the caffeine, leaving the flavor intact. As a solvent, carbon dioxide is nontoxic, odorless, tasteless, germicidal, food safe, and noncombustible, and the process does not cause environmental harm. For more information, send e-mail to Linda@serendipitea.com, call 888-TEA-LIFE, or visit www.serendipitea.com.

The Republic of Tea introduced five new Fair Trade-certified teas to its line of premium teas. The new line includes Tangarine Orange with a crisp, clean citrus blend of orange and tangerine paired with green tea. Cranberry Blood Orange is a sweet tart mix of cranberries and blood oranges together with fine black tea. Wild Blueberry mixes lush blueberries with the rich malty notes of black tea. Apricot Decaf mixes sweet apricot with a naturally decaffeinated black tea. The Fair Trade-certified teas retail for a suggested price of $9.50 ($11 for the Apricot Decaf).
