Most Traditional Media Sites Had A Weak Spring Break
Wetpaint ceo and publishing consultant/media investor Ben Elowitz just finished comparing the online traffic growth rates among major media sites and their Web-only counterparts across content segments. In most cases, especially in the teen and entertainment news categories, sites without offline presence are growing faster than traditional media brands online. In other words, Elowitz argues, old media (up 5% in traffic in 2009) are losing ground to the “dot.com” upstarts (up 10%). He cites traditional media’s persistent difficulties adapting to the news posting cycles and content discovery techniques that endemic Web companies embrace faster and better.
