Gourmet supermarket Fairway Market reportedly plans to open a store
in the Westchester County town of Pelham Manor in mid- to
late-2009, Progressive Grocer reports.
Fairway owner Howie Glickberg told Westchester newspaper the
Journal News that he has signed a lease on a
75,000-square-foot site formerly occupied by Kmart. "That whole
area is underserved by food markets," he noted.
According to Glickberg, at least a few thousand people travel south
from Westchester on a weekly basis to shop at his store in the
Harlem section of Manhattan.
The company is searching for other locations in Westchester, but
nothing else has been finalized.
The Pelham Manor store will bring the number of the company's
stores to six. Fairway currently operates four supermarkets in
Manhattan, Long Island and Brooklyn, with a fifth set to open in
Paramus, N.J., about six months from now.
The Pelham Plaza shopping center, where the store will be located,
is in the midst of an 18-month multimillion-dollar environmental
cleanup by utility company Consolidated Edison.
New York-based Fairway is marking its 75th anniversary this year.
